Sacred Heart School has adopted the “Meet the Masters” program for art instruction. Each unit of the curriculum has three parts to the structured, discipline-based instruction:

1. Instruction is given introducing an artist with slides, music, and participation-based critiques.

2. An art packet is done in class which reinforces art elements and terms introduced at the assembly.

3. Finally, a hands-on art activity in the style of the master artist, exploring different media and techniques, is completed. Each art activity is geared towards individuality, creativity and success. The fact that art history is introduced in a fun way right along with the art activity, leads to good retention of historical names, styles, world history and geography.

The introduction of many different media, techniques and styles builds students’ confidence in their own artwork, and gives them skills for the future.

Artists include: Vincent van Gogh*, Claude Monet*, Winslow Homer*, Pablo Picasso*, Mary Cassatt, Piet Mondrian and M.C. Escher, Frederic Remington*, Georgia O’Keeffe*, Henri Matisse*, Frida Kahlo*, Katsushika Hokusai, Edgar Degas, Grant Wood, Joan Miro*, Rembrandt van Rijn*, Rosa Bonheur*, Paul Gauguin*, Jacob Lawrence, Alexander Calder and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
